A dead body was found washed ashore off of North Douglas Highway Thursday evening, said a Juneau Police Department <\/a>spokesperson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“A resident in the area had been walking near the beach when they made the discovery and called JPD,” said Lt. Krag Campbell in a news release. “The deceased was identified as a 60-year-old male Juneau resident.”<\/p>\n

Police did not name the man and are currently attempting to notify the next of kin.<\/p>\n

The man was identified by his Alaska identification card, according to police. It and other personal items were still on his person.<\/p>\n

The body appeared to have been in the water for several hours, but not much longer, Campbell said. The man was lacerated across the right check, but investigators were unable to determine if that was from before or after going into the water, Campbell said.<\/p>\n

“Based on prior police contacts, responding officers were familiar with the deceased and knew that he lived out of a residential vehicle, which was contacted by JPD in the Harris Harbor parking lot back in August,” Campbell said. “Officers went to the Harris Harbor parking lot and located the same vehicle parked there.”<\/p>\n

The vehicle was seized and searched, but police found nothing that suggested how the man died or came to be in the water, Campbell said. The body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy, Campbell said.<\/p>\n
